Retrospective Cycles is owned and run by Niall McCart, a lifelong enthusiast of Italian two wheeled transport. Retrospective Cycles grew out of Retrospective Scooters which has been importing, restoring, repairing and servicing vintage Vespas and Lambrettas from Italy since the late 1990’s.
Niall’s two wheel obsession started when he was just 16 and fell into the Mod scene that was dominating the youth of the UK at the time. Being too young for a scooter, he obtained his first classic racing bike to-be (a Raleigh) that started the ball rolling.
Niall started his own scooter business in the late 1990’s, when the Italian scooter began a major resurgence. Since then he has built a reputation as one of the UK’s leading experts in Vespa and Lambretta restoration.
A couple of years ago he decided to re-kindle his interest in racing bicycles as the boom in cycling seemed to be taking a turn back towards racing bikes and perhaps more importantly vintage racing bikes.
Having built an amazing network of contacts across Italy during his years working on scooters, he soon located regular supplies of vintage road bikes too. The first trip to Italy expressly to pick up some classic racing bikes was in 2010 when the first 10 bikes were brought back to the UK and posted for sale on Ebay. These sold very quickly and it was clear that his knowledge and contacts could be used to diversify the business.
The next step was to launch another website and then to bring back a full load of 50 classic Italian racing bikes. This first haul included a re-sprayed bike that turned out to be a very rare Galmozzie Supercourse, a very early Wilier Triestina and there was also a Colnago Mexico in there too! As these bikes sold out, Niall grew his contacts and knowledge of the classic racing bike market allowing him to seek out and find ever more interesting, rare and exciting bikes.
Most recently, in January 2014, the business moved around the corner from it's original location to a large warehouse with space to display all the cycles alongside many of the classic scooters that have been restored by Niall and his team.
This website is a shop window for thousands of enthusiasts of the vintage road bike scene who come here to find the perfect bike with first class advice and customer service direct from Niall.
